But the older I get, the more I wonder if that rainy night trip to Kentucky was ever really about a dog in the first place.

Comfort does not always come from someone who has it all together. Sometimes it comes from someone willing to sit close and silently confess, “I know what it is to be afraid.”

Because when you know the tree that leads to everlasting life… you don’t waste much time listening to dogs barking up the wrong one.

They had heard the clang of swords. They had marched in desert heat. They had buried loved ones. They had lived in constant tension. And now, as they stood staring at giants in the land, I’m not sure it was simply fear of defeat that gripped them. I think they were tired of the noise. Sometimes it’s not that you doubt God. It’s that you’re tired of fighting.

A life verse that takes me back: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Colossians 3:23 (ESV)

We aren’t accidents. We aren’t products of pressure or culture. We are created with purpose—eternal, God-given purpose. I told someone onetime that I didn’t believe in God until I was 27 years old, but God has always believed in me.

Faithfulness opens doors we never could force open on our own. Then there’s Samuel’s reminder: “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22, ESV). God has never been impressed by outward show. He isn’t moved by spiritual noise or religious performance. What He desires is a heart that listens, trusts, and responds. Quiet obedience has always mattered more to Him than loud gestures.

God used a beautiful but broken dog to remind me that true righteousness is an inside job. Faith is not about appearances, titles, or pedigree. It’s about a heart surrendered to God.
